i especially like this notion of catharsis in ‘computers as theatre.’
catharsis is not complete until the audience members take what they have assimilated from the representation and put it to work in their lives…the representation lives between imagination and reality, serving as a conductor, amplifier, clarifier and motivator.
it seems to be a good way of moving through something. for instance bob dylan’s early days of playing only woody guthrie songs or woody allen’s infinite allusions to ingmar bergman or the marx brothers. i suppose it also feels helpful to know that exposure to something over time amounts to…style. well, that coupled with constraints. as Émile Zola said,
“One forges one’s style on the terrible anvil of daily deadlines.”
