Wireframes for Walkshare iPhone Application

The purpose of this application is to share ‘annotated walks’ with friends. A user can trace a route on a map, drop pins along the way, and then add notes and photographs to add interesting facts and visuals. After the route is created, a user can save and send it to a friend.

The MassArt Made embedded storySystem installation as implemented for the Store’s Grand Opening on Tuesday, April 12, 2011 uses a variety of cutting-edge technologies and systems to magically correlate an artist’s voice with merchandise sold in the store. A visitor to MassArt Made can pick up an ‘Artist Card’ next to certain, select sale items in the store and scan in a QR Code ( QR = ‘quick response’ ) on the card into the storyScanner to trigger and play a corresponding 30 second audio clip posted out on the MassArt Made website. The artist tells a story about their artwork, thus providing new context to the piece through an aural trace back to the artist. The stories engage the entire captive audience of shoppers in the MassArt Made store location in a unique, new way that connects story to object, voice to product, and ultimately visitors to the stores more directly to the collective vocal history of MassArt’s amazingly rich students, alumni and faculty.

reMap is a proposal for an iPhone application. The project was inspired by the French philosopher Guy Debord whose theory of psychogeography was to “[invent] strategies for exploring cities…just about anything that takes pedestrians off their predictable paths and jolts them into a new awareness of the urban landscape.” (Debord)

A user walks according to a previous users directions and geotags their photographs and then leaves directions for the next user resulting in a collaborative and unpredictable ground level mapping project.

The project began by coming up with an algorithm to explore the urban environment by walking and photographing a participants surroundings. Each participant (over thirty people) was asked to walk the following directions from any starting point in their city: 1) walk west 2) take your first right 3) take your first left 4) take your first right 5) stop. These were the only restrictions. A participant was then encouraged to take photographs at any point along their walk. Some of the cities covered were: Boston, Paris, Auckland, Santiago de Chile, and Tokyo.

Mapkin

Mapkin was shown at the exhibition ‘Provocative Objects’ at MassArt in November, 2010. The interaction was very simple. I created an area for a person to draw a map of the world on a napkin, take a picture of it using the webcam, and enter it into a projected slideshow (thanks to Pol Pla i Conesa and Alex Wang). I collected over one hundred hand-drawn maps that represented the unique perspectives of the mapmaker and their knowledge of geography.

You Are Here was a simulation for an idea of combining Google Maps and social networking. I used the little ‘yellow guy’ to go out on Streetview and approach houses to trade files like a Peer-to-Peer network. I made the prototype as a stop-motion simulation and created a scenario of how he might trade files. The project was influenced by psychogeography and using the geographical landscape (in this case the digital landscape) as a way for exploring the possibilities it can offer.

Chinatown

Chinatown is a site-specific interactive narrative in Chinatown, Boston. The project uses QR codes to ‘tag’ stories told through videos that a participant can access using a camera on their phone to scan the individual codes. After a participant watches the video, they are prompted to record a video, sound or take photographs and create their own QR codes to leave in Chinatown for others to experience. The hope for this project was to create an ongoing interactive story of the people, places and food in Chinatown. Much of my work in the Dynamic Media Institute has been about mapping experiences of a ‘place.’ This project allowed me to explore the different possibilities of mapping stories to a specific space in order to understand what made it a ‘place.’ I spent several weeks collecting content by photographing and recording audio of the people I interacted with. I interviewed a handful of people including a hairdresser, a restaurant worker and a fishmonger. Through these interactions I created a non-linear story separated into ten video segments for a participant to experience using a mobile device in the space where the interactions occurred. After editing the content, I uploaded the videos to Youtube and then generated Quick Response (QR) codes from each video URL. I then designed a sticker with the QR code and basic instructions to download the QR code reader for the iPhone. The stories could then be experienced in any order that a participant wished as they located the stickers throughout Chinatown. Inspirations for this project included Yellow Arrow, Itinerant by Teri Rueb, and Wasser by Stefan Schemat.

Ground Truth

Ground Truth is an interactive map for finding local information through the people at ground level. A user searches an area of interest through the application on their computer. People who are logged into the service on their mobile device show up on the interactive map. We can then choose someone to show us around through their avatar on Streetview and interact with them through a dialogue box that sends a text message to their phone. As they provide information, we can either trash it or keep it. If we decide to keep it, they can give us a video, image or sound file that we can later recall when we visit the place on our own.
